Anemia is a blood disorder marked by either red blood cells containing too little hemoglobin or too few red blood cells in the blood. (Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.) Anemia can have a number of causes, including alcoholism, excessive bleeding, illness, infections, poor bone marrow function, poor diet, and pregnancy. It is important to determine the cause of the anemia and treat the underlying condition.
